PCPA’s SUMMER SEASON
COMING SOON

The 39 Steps - Hairspray - The Two Gentlemen of Verona
My Fairytale – Caroline, or Change

PCPA Theaterfest’s ambitious season continues with simultaneous openings on June 16 in Santa Maria and Solvang. The big musical Hairspray is chockfull of favorites such as “Good Morning Baltimore,” “I’m a Big Girl Now” and the infectious “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” It will play in Santa Maria’s Marian Theatre from June 16 through July 2 before transfering to Solvang. Hairspray will be directed and choreographed by Michael Jenkinson and features Bree Murphy as Tracy Turnblad the girl who turns
the teenage television dance program, The Corny Collins Show, on its ear. Her mom/agent Edna will be played by Sam Zeller (Les Misérables). Meanwhile, the hilarious-romantic-thriller, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, remounts in the Solvang Festival Theater. Slocity News called it “A triumph of timing and ingenuity.” The Sun observed, “Laughs come in dizzying succession,” and The Tribune called it, “Extraordinary! Brilliant and fun.” The 39 Steps plays under the stars from June 16 through July 3 and features just four actors playing nearly 100 characters: Andrew Philpot is Richard Hannay, Stephanie Philo is Pamela, Annabella, and Margaret. Playing a myriad of spies, entertainers, salesmen, policemen, inn keepers, etc., are Peter S. Hadres and Evans Eden Jarnefeldt.
As Hairspray moves to Solvang (running July 8-31), Shakespeare’s comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona plays in the Marian Theatre July 15 - 30, then in Solvang August 5 - 21. Set in the 1920s, this story of love and friendship is centered around Proteus (Evans Eden Jarnefeldt) and Valentine (Tobias Shaw). Proteus adores Julia (Stephanie Philo) but while in Milan falls in love with Sylvia (Megan C.C. Walker) the Duke’s daughter, who has also caught the eye of Valentine. Amid this broad poetic lovers romp and desguises is Valentine’s prattling servant Speed (Paul Culos), and Proteus’ servant Launce (Leo Cortez) who is master to a mutt named Crab. The pair provide the non-stop comic relief.
As the summer heats up, this positively amazing season crests with the American Premiere of My Fairytale co-authored by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pocahontas), music and lyrics, and Philip LaZebnik (Prince of Egypt, Pocahontas), book. The musical, conceived by Flemming Enevold, takes place one night when the famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen is confined inside the Royal Danish Theatre.
Andersen finds himself imprisoned in his own fairytale world where he must fight for his life against his shadow and where he meets a traveling companion, a small boy, named Hans Christian. This enchanted story, with its glorious score, delves into the imagination of H.C. Andersen which courses through a series of adventures and encounters with the characters that would later populate his fairytales. My Fairytale previews in Santa Maria’s Marian Theatre August 12 - 20, then begins its premiere engagement in the Solvang Festival Theater August 26 - September 25. It will be directed by Scott Schwartz with choreography by Michael Jenkinson, musical direction by Callum Morris, scenic design by Tom Buderwitz, costumes by Alejo Vietti, lighting by Jen ‘Z’ Zornow, and sound by Walter TJ Clissen. Resident and Guest Actors include: Karin Hendricks, Andrew Philpot, Erik Stein, Natasha Harris, Bree Murphy, George Walker, and Sam Zeller.
In conjunction with Solvang’s Centennial, an Opening Night Celebration for My Fairytale is planned on August 27 at Hotel Corque, 420 Alisal Road, Solvang. Tickets are $75 through the PCPA Box Office - www.pcpa.org - (805) 922-8313.
Members of the design team will be in attendance including, Stephen Schwartz (music and lyrics), Flemming Enevold (creator), and Scott Schwartz (director).

My Fairytale is a featured event in the Festival of New American Musicals.

Closing the season is another musical of epic proportion, Caroline, or Change by Tony Kushner (Angels in America). It will play September 1 – 18, 2011 in the Marian Theatre in Santa Maria. In 1963 Louisiana the world rumbles with change, marked by JFK’s assassination, a rising Civil Rights movement and the escalation of the Vietnam War. Caroline Thibodeaux, a divorced African American housemaid irons out a challenging dilemma – to accept loose coins from the pockets of the Gellman family’s laundry and buy her own children a better future or to stay awash in the memories and burdens of the past by returning the money and hanging on to her principles.
What is the price of integrity? What will it take to keep the change? Answers resound in the next generation - Emmie, her teenage daughter, and the young Jewish boy, Noah Gellman - who will help Caroline see how to ride the changing tide. This Tony-nominated score features and fuses great American musical styles – gospel, R&B, soul, andblues; it swings with power and sings with pride. Caroline, or Change will be directed by Patricia M. Troxel with musical direction by Brad Carroll (Lend Me a Tenor, the Musical) and features Karole Foreman (Medium, Mama Mia!) as Caroline, Joanna Jones (The Sing-Off) as Emmie, Elizabeth Stuart (Pride and Prejudice) as Rose Stopnick Gellman and Michael Tremblay (Ragtime) as Mr. Stopnick.
