FESTIVAL INVITATION


As Festival Director and on behalf of Allan Hancock College, it is my privilege to invite you to the 2009 La Guitarra California Festival on the campus of Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California (65 miles north of Santa Barbara).

The 2009 Festival will be a “Celebration of Guitar!” as we present an outstanding lineup of 16 internationally acclaimed artists in 14 events! There will be 10 major concerts, 3 Masterclasses, a free Lecture, dozens of luthiers displaying their hand-made instruments, and the Forderer Collection of Rare and Historic Guitars will be on display. This collection is a “must-see” and these rare instruments will be used in the free Lecture.

The Masterclasses will have added interest for guitar students of all ages and levels. They will be conducted by an exceptional group of world renowned teachers: David Tanenbaum, Head of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Berta Rojas, internationally acclaimed teacher and performer and David Leisner, Co-Director of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Each Masterclass is limited to four participants at a cost of only $50 and includes two “auditor” tickets. Manuel Barrueco
Manuel Barrueco is internationally recognized as one of the most important guitarists of our time. He began playing the guitar at age eight and attended the Esteban Salas Conservatory in his native Cuba. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he completed his advanced studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD. For over three decades he has dedicated his career to bringing the guitar to the main musical centers of the world. He is a prolific musician with an enormous body of work. He has performed with the world’s renowned symphony orchestras and his solo career has taken him to the major venues across the globe. Maestro Barrueco teaches at the esteemed Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD. His students have gone on to become the most recognized and successful guitarists in the world.
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ)
Recognized as one of America’s premier instrumental ensembles, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is one of the most charismatic and versatile groups performing today. These four guitar virtuosos bring a new energy to the concert stage with their eclectic programs and dynamic musical interplay. Celebrating their twenty-seventh year on the concert stage, the members of the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet continue to set the standard for expression among guitar ensembles. With over a dozen recordings over the past two decades, they have established themselves as masters of the classics, as well as the creators of the unique syntheses of world-music and contemporary styles that have made the “LAGQ-sound” a favorite around the world.
Carlos Barbosa-Lima
Carlos Barbosa-Lima began studying guitar at age seven, made his concert debut at age 11 and his recording debut at age 12. Since his US debut in 1967, he has enjoyed a global concert career, marked by numerous and distinguished recordings. Although his approach to music is classical, his playing combines many styles and many important composers have composed music for him. A brilliant guitarist and arranger, Barbosa-Lima brings his musical virtuosity to a wide range of works. He taught for many years at the Manhattan School of Music in NYC . He now resides in Puerto Rico, touring and recording worldwide.
Berta Rojas
Born in Ascension, Paraguay Berta Rojas began her guitar studies at an early age. She has become one of today’s most recognized and acclaimed guitarists as she captivates her audiences around the globe. Praised by the Washington Post as a “guitarist extraordinaire,” and by England’s Classical Guitar Magazine as “Ambassador of the Classical Guitar,” she is recognized as the world’s foremost performer and authority of the music of the Paraguayan Maestro, Agustín Barrios. Ms. Rojas holds a Master’s Degree in Music from the prestigious Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has recognized Rojas’ artistic excellence and named her a “Fellow of the Americas” and she is Paraguay’s Ambassador of Tourism. Berta Rojas is Professor of Guitar at George Washington University in Washington DC.
David Leisner
David Leisner is an extraordinarily versatile musician with a multi-faceted career as an electrifying performing artist, a distinguished composer, and a Master Teacher. Regarded as one of the world’s leading classical guitarists, his superb musicianship and provocative programming have been applauded by critics and audiences around the world. Mr. Leisner’s career began with top prizes in both the 1975 Toronto and 1981 Geneva International Guitar Competitions. Celebrated for expanding the guitar repertoire, David Leisner has introduced many important new works and has been a tireless advocate for neglected gems of the past. Mr. Leisner taught at the New England Conservatory for 22 years and is currently Co-chairman of the guitar department at the distinguished Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
David Tanenbaum
Recognized internationally as an outstanding performing and recording artist, a charismatic educator, and a transcriber and editor, David Tanenbaum is one of the most admired classical guitarists of his generation. He has performed throughout the world for over 35 years. In 1988 was the first American guitarist to perform in China. While his repertoire encompasses many diverse styles, David Tanenbaum is recognized as one of today’s most eloquent proponents of new guitar repertoire. His three dozen recordings includes a Grammy Nomination in 2002. He is currently a member of the World Guitar Ensemble, which regularly tours the world. David Tanenbaum has been Artist-In-Residence at the Manhattan School of Music and is currently Chair of the Guitar Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he received the 1995 Outstanding Professor Award.
Jérémy Jouve
Jérémy Jouve began studying the guitar in Chambéry, France and at the age of just 13 he obtained the “Premier Prix” of the Grenoble Conservatoire National de Région. He then was admitted to the acclaimed studio of Eric Franceries. Moving to Paris at 18, he studied with Maestro Alberto Ponce at the Ecole Normale de Musique and at the acclaimed Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique where he was a student of Roland Dyens. He graduated with degrees in both guitar and chamber music. Mr. Jouve won 1st Prize at the 2002 Tychy International Guitar Competition (Poland) followed by First Prize at the 2003 Guitar Foundation of America Guitar Competition.
Carlos Pérez
Carlos Pérez was born in Santiago, Chile and began his guitar studies at an early age with his father. He graduated with top honors from the Arts Faculty of the University of Chile. He has been awarded the top prizes in major international competitions in Europe and America, winning First Prize at: The 1996 10th Alirio Díaz Competition (Venezuela), The 1997 20th René Bartoli Competition (France), The 1998 6th Printemps de La Guitare (Belgium), The 2000 3rd Forum Gitarre” (Austria), The 2000 14th Fundacion Guerrero (Spain) and the 2006 Joaquín Rodrigo Competition (Spain.)
The Alturas Duo
The Alturas Duo is recognized as one of the most entertaining ensembles performing in world today. The only group of its kind, the Duo plays South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of guitar, viola and the charango (a small stringed instrument invented by the native people of South America in the 18th Century) The Duo is Carlos Boltes, from Santiago, Chile, who plays the charango and viola and Scott Hill, a native of Ontario, Canada, plays guitar and other string instuments. They are First Prize winners of the 2006 New England Int’l Chamber Music Competition and have held residencies at the Lyrica String Festival and the Hartt School of Music. Carlos and Scott are founders and Artistic Directors of the Simsbury Chamber Music Festival and teach at University of Hartford, Connecticut.
Judicaël Perroy
In 1980, at just 7 years old, Judicaël Perroy began guitar studies at the Paris Academy of Music. An acknowledged prodigy by the age of 11, he played two Vivaldi Concertos conducted by the famous French musician André Girard. His international prizes and awards are numerous: At age 14, he won Second Prize at the 1984 International Competition of the Ile-de France. At age 18, he was awarded a unanimous First Prize with a Special Mention at the 1988 Academy of Aulnay-sous-Bois. He won First Prize and the “Prix du Publique” at the 1992 René Bartoli International Competition. In 1994 he won the 7th International Competition of Bourg-Madame. In 1995, he was awarded the Level “CA”, the highest teaching certificate that an individual must have in order to teach at the French National Academy. And he won First Prize at the 1997 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition.
Michael Partington
Michael Partington began playing guitar at age 6 while growing up in Wales, gave his first public performance at age 7 and won his first competition at age 9. Mr. Partington is one of the most engaging of the new generation of concert players. This award-winning British guitarist has performed internationally as a soloist and with ensemble to unanimous critical praise. His innate rhythmic understanding and sense for tonal color combine to form some of the most memorable phrasing to be heard. Mr. Partington is Director of the Guitar Program at the University of Washington.
