PCPA presents the Broadway Smash-Hit Musical
Mamma Mia!

The sunny and funny Mamma Mia! spins and sparkles into the ultimate feel-good smash-hit musical for summer 2018. It will play July 18 – 21 in the Marian Theatre in Santa Maria before transferring to Solvang to play under the stars from July 27 through August 26. The energy and charm of ABBA’s songs propel this enchanting tale with love, laughter and friendship. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie has secretly invited three men from her mother Donna's past back to the Greek island paradise they last visited 20 years ago in a quest to discover the identity of her father. Donna’s long-time friends from her past girl-group “Donna and the Dynamos” also arrive for the wedding to catch up and reminisce, turning a trip down the aisle into one you’ll never forget!

Director Brad Carroll sums up the plot - a girl from the 70s and a girl from the 90s, which creates instant friction, and then three guys, any of whom could be the father of the bride to be. “In that sense, it could be turned into a Shakespeare play. Character in search of father and going through all these trials to figure out who it is. But Shakespeare plays aren’t held together by the music of ABBA. Some of the songs are built into the script just like a good old fashioned Rodgers and Hammerstein musical where the song actually forwards the plot as oppose to stopping the play, doing a number, and moving on.” Carroll said some songs are just an out and out tribute to ABBA and some seem senseless, “which we’ll be giving some sense to. Kind of like Shrek or Freaky Friday, they have heart, but outrageous circumstances.”

Carroll sites his usual comedic role models: Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett, and Charlie Chaplin because their comedy is always a product of the dire situation they find themselves in. “They’re not trying to be funny. But we laugh at their situation because they take it so seriously. That’s going to be my approach. It’s going to be silly, giddy, fun from start to finish.”

Under Carroll’s direction, the creative team includes Choreographer Katie Fuchs-Wackowski, Music Director Paul Marszalkowski, Scenic Designer Jason Bolen, Costume Designer Eddy L. Barrows, Lighting Designer Jennifer ‘Z’ Zornow, Sound Designer Elisabeth Weidner, and Production Stage Manager Ellen Beltramo*. The cast includes Molly Dobbs as Sophie Sheridan, Melinda Parrett* as Donna Sheridan, Allison Rich* as Tanya, Kitty Balay* as Rosie, Erik Stein* as Bill Austin, Michael Tremblay as Harry Bright, Jeff Salsbury as Sky, Meami Maszewski as Ali, Natalie Graham as Lisa, Sam Lariviere as Eddie, Tim Fullerton as Sam Charmichael, and Nima Rakhshanifar as Father Alexandrios.

Mamma Mia! came to fruition under the idea of theatre producer Judy Craymer. After seeing the 1983 musical, Chess, for which Andersson and Ulvaeus also wrote the music, she asked to sit down with them and talk about future plans. When she heard their song "The Winner Takes It All," she realized the theatrical potential of the group's pop songs. Although the composers were initially not enthusiastic about the idea, they commissioned her to go forward with their work. Craymer then recruited playwright Catherine Johnson to write the book and took on Phyllida Lloyd as the director of the original London production. The musical opened on Broadway in 2001 and closed in 2015 having played 5,773 performances. It has played in more than 50 countries on 6 continents and has been translated into 22 languages reaching over 60 million people worldwide. Mamma Mia! has set the record for premiering in more cities faster than any other musical in history. In 2002 it was nominated for 5 Tony Awards, 3 Drama Desk Awards, and 2 Outer Critics Circle Awards. The Chinese premiere at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on July 11, 2011, was the first time a contemporary Western musical was presented in Chinese in Shanghai. A film adaptation of Mamma Mia! was released in July 2008 featuring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Pierce Brosnan. A sequel to the film is slated for release this summer.
