FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 2007 Or: Education and Outreach Director (Editors: please contact PCPA if you would like to attend a performance in area schools.) EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
This season, PCPA Education and Outreach has more to offer schools than ever before. Besides the touring productions of The Pearl and the bilingual musical Hot Tamale!/Tamale Caliente!, Theater on the Spot makes its return. In addition, PCPA in the Schools is in the works for its second year. This unique theater project takes the writings of students then turns those thoughts into a script that is performed for them by PCPA acting students. Education and Outreach is also offering three main stage productions to local schools as part of the Student Matinee Program. This Winter/Spring’s productions include The Sound of Music (Sold Out) for grades 1 through 12, Othello for grades seven through college level, and Godspell for grades 1 through 12. For Junior and Senior High School grade levels—and touring through May 18, 2008—is Steinbeck’s The Pearl, adapted by Warren Frost. It’s the story of Kino, a poor pearl fisher whose life is changed forever when he discovers “the pearl of the world.” Kino however is faced with greed, envy and betrayal and realizes that his dreams may only be achieved by making life’s ultimate sacrifice. This play is ideal for Social Studies, English Literature curriculum enhancement and Drama students in grades 7 through 12. For elementary school grade levels—also touring through May 18, 2008—is a bilingual musical by Roy Conboy, Hot Tamale!/Tamale Caliente! In an exploration of Mexican culture, traditions and friendship, this whimsical tale follows Gina, a young school reporter, on a quest to find the world’s hottest tamale in the world (which will restore her Mariachi friend’s lost singing voice). She’s convinced it will be the hottest story to hit the school press. As with all PCPA Education and Outreach bilingual productions, Hot Tamale! / Tamale Caliente! is presented in both Spanish and English so speakers of either language will understand the story. It’s best suited for grades K-6. Coming this January for all grade levels, elementary through high school, is the return of Theatre on the Spot, a Playback Theatre Company. This is the perfect vehicle for getting students into the act. Performers don’t use a script. Instead they take an actual event from a student’s life and turn it into a performance with music, movement and spoken word. It’s an innovative and interactive performance which enables students to view their lives in new ways and explore their common human experiences. Besides being the subject of the scene, the “Teller” gets to choose which actors play what characters in their story. This is one performance your students will be talking about for years to come. Theatre on the Spot is suitable for grades K-12. Now in its second year, PCPA in the Schools continues it’s exploration of turning real life stories into fully staged performances. The project involves two phases. It begins with a PCPA artist who comes into the school and conducts four writing workshops. The written work from those students is then distilled into a touring production that will be performed in the spring of 2008 for the entire school. PCPA directors and actors create the original play which provides a richly rewarding and creative experience for everyone involved. PCPA in the Schools is designed for grades 5 through 12.
