PCPA Theaterfest offers
subsidized Outreach performances

Through a new $31,200 grant, the Santa Barbara Foundation and PCPA Foundation are ensuring that students of low income households are not barred from the arts.

This grant provides underserved schools in northern Santa Barbara County the opportunity to apply immediately for fully subsidized Special PCPA Education and Outreach touring performances which bring live theatre to the school. The application is on line at www.pcpa.org/specialoutreach.

Available productions for this subsidy are the two current touring shows: Luis and the Great Field Trip Adventure and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs which are touring through May 2012. And, the - yet to be announced - touring production for next fall, with performances from October through December 2012.

Schools that wish to apply for these subsidized performances are encouraged to fill out a very simple online application on the PCPA website as soon as possible. The form is listed under the Outreach tab.

The $31,200 grant was made possible through Santa Barbara Foundation’s collaboration with the Orfalea Foundation and the Cavalletto Charities. The grant can potentially underwrite 80 performances for grades K-12. Outreach performances are adaptable to any space and size configuration from classrooms to auditoriums with audience sizes up to 350 students, which when this grant is finally maximized, 28,000 students will have been introduced to live theatre in their schools.

PCPA Foundation Executive Director Gillian Cole-Andrews expressed her deepest gratitude to the Santa Barbara Foundation for realizing the urgent need for keeping arts in the classroom as tightening budgets reduce field trips and onsite art related activities. “Under imminent threat of more cuts to their budgets, some schools are struggling to participate in this vital part of their arts education curriculum.” Cole-Andrews added, “Those schools without strong auxiliary support such as Parent-Teacher Associations and families with ready financial resources are most at risk.”

The special subsidized performances will be given to eligible schools in northern Santa Barbara County based on need, socioeconomic data, and previous history of engagement.

Luis and the Great Field Trip Adventure is a new musical by Wendy-Marie Foerster and Jason Miller. The story is about Luis who loves being the star player on his baseball team, but he hates doing his homework. On a science field trip to Nojoqui Falls, Luis is quick to stray from the path and his survival skills are put to the test. Thanks to some wise tree spirits he realizes the dangers of ignorance and importance of knowledge. The show also explores Chumash legends.

Jon Scieszka’s The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, adapted by Leo Cortez puts students in the jury box as Mr. Alexander T. Wolf finally gets his day in court. He claims that the common story of his huffing and puffing and blowing down pigs’ homes is founded on the biased opinion of a sensationalized news story! It’s the fairytale trial of the century. Dramatic video of Mr. Wolf’s arrest is available at www.pcpa.org, under Outreach, Touring Productions.
