PCPA presents the Outrageous and Hilarious
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, playwright Christopher Durang puts dysfunction to hilarious effect when three siblings reunite in the family’s Bucks County, PA home. It plays in the Marian Theatre June 28 – July 7, then in the Solvang Festival Theater July 12 – 22. Vanya and Sonia bicker and pine about the dashed dreams and squandered hopes of their lives while their fortune-telling maid warns of impending dangers. The sibling’s movie-star sister, Masha, suddenly swoops in with her new boy-toy, Spike and threatens to sell the family estate, complete with cherry orchard. Meanwhile, Nina, an aspiring actress from next door catches Spike’s attention and Masha’s jealousy is not easily concealed in the company of this young and attractive threat. However, Nina has inspired Vanya to stage his avant-garde play which he has secretly written. This Tony-winning farce on Chekhovian themes is the perfect summer tonic. (Adult language)

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is directed by Mark Booher and the creative team includes Scenic Designer Kent Homchick, Costume Designer Sara Curran Ice, Lighting Designer Tim Thistleton, Sound Designer Elisabeth Weidner, and Stage Manager Zoia N. Wiseman. The cast includes resident artists Peter S. Hadres as Vanya and Polly Firestone Walker as Masha with guest artists Anne Guynn as Sonia, Sam Bravo as Spike, Annali Fuchs-Wackowski as Cassandra and Madison Shaheen as Nina.

The play premiered at McCarter Theatre in 2012. In 2013, it transferred to Broadway and its run was extended twice playing 201 performances on Broadway. The Broadway cast included David Hyde Pierce and long-time friend and fellow Yale alum Sigourney Weaver. Subsequent performances were mounted at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, Phoenix Theatre, Guthrie Theater and ACT in Seattle. It received six Tony Award Nominations, winning the Tony Award for Best Play. Other Best Play awards: Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, New York Drama Critics, Theatre World, Off Broadway Alliance, and Artios Awards. Christopher Durang played Vanya with Marilu Henner as Masha in a production at the Bucks County Playhouse in 2014
